The 1-metre Schmidt telescope at La Silla
The newly built ESO 1-metre Schmidt telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. The hoisting machine is used to place unexposed photographic plates or take out them out after the observation had been made. This picture was taken in 1971.
