Warum so blau?
Mit der Farbe Blau verbinden wir viele Dinge – Kälte, Traurigkeit oder Ruhe. Doch für Astronomen bedeutet blau etwas ganz anderes, wie man an dieser fast von der Kante her betrachteten Spiralgalaxie Messier 98 sieht.
Messier 98, auch als NGC 4192 bezeichnet, ist ungefähr 50 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt und steht im Sternbild Coma Berenices (Haar der Berenike). In diesem Bild, das mit dem New Technology Telescope (NTT) der ESO gewonnen wurde, erscheint der von Gas und Staub durchzogene Rand der Galaxie mit bläulichen Regionen gespickt zu sein. Dies sind Ansammlungen junger Sterne, die so heiß sind, dass sie mit einem bläulichen Schimmer leuchten. Diese jungen Sterne haben eine so hohe Temperatur, dass sie harte Strahlung aussenden, welche das dichte Gas in ihrer Umgebung teilweise wegbrennt. Man schätzt, dass Messier 98 etwa eine Billion Sterne enthält!
Das NTT ist ein 3,58-Meter Teleskop am La-Silla-Observatorium, bei dem erstmals Aktive Optik eingesetzt wurde und das als weltweit erstes mit einem computergesteuerten Hauptspiegel ausgestattet wurde.
