ESO Period 112 Proposal Submission Statistics

Published: 30 Mar 2023

The deadline for proposal submission for Period 112 (1 October 2023 - 31 March 2024) was 28 March 2023: 895 valid proposals were submitted, of which 37 are Large Programmes.  On the VLT, the most demanded ESO instrument was MUSE with a request of 425 nights, followed by ESPRESSO with 347 nights and X-Shooter with 257 nights. HARPS/NIRPS on the ESO 3.6-metre telescope was the most demanded instrument at La Silla, with a combined request of 297 nights.

In Paranal, the telescope with the highest oversubscription is Yepun (UT4), with a total request of 690 nights, followed by Melipal (UT3; 507 nights). As in P111, 90% of programmes requested Service Mode in P111 at the VLT.

For the first time ESO offered the VLT/I-ALMA joint programmes.

The distributed peer review (DPR) in P112 followed the setup introduced in P110. Thus the DPR channel processes proposals requesting a total telescope time of 16h or less, and will evaluate 50% of all submitted proposals, covering 11% of all the requested time. The rest of the proposals will be reviewed by the Observing Programmes Committee.

The percentages of submitted proposals across science categories were:

  • Cosmology and Intergalactic Medium 11.2%
  • Galaxies  25.9%
  • Interstellar Medium, Star Formation, and Planetary Systems 40.6%
  • Stellar Evolution 22.3%
