10 INSTALLATION GUIDE

10.1 INSTALLATION OF ICB

icb is part of the VLT common sw. See [11] for information about its installation.

10.2 INSTALLATION OF AN ICS BASED ON ICB

10.2.1 Installation in a Development Host

See the general description of the whole Template Instrument Software in [23].

10.2.2 Environment Variables

Once ICS is installed, in addition to the usual environment variables defined in a VLT account, the following are mandatory env. variables that must be defined in the user shell when ICS is used (before ICS is started):

· INTROOT - the path to the integration area containing the instrument software. Example:
export INTROOT=/vlt/XXXX/INTROOT
· INS_ROOT - the path containing the instrument directory. Example:
export INS_ROOT=/data/XXXX/INS_ROOT

In a development host, it is recommended to set these variables in the user account, in file:

~/.pecs/apps-all.env

Once the above environment variables have been set, a new xterm should be opened to start a new shell:

xterm -ls -sb

When the shell starts, file $INTROOT/config/xxins-misc-all.env is sourced. It sets all other environment variables needed to run the instrumentation software.

Other definitions, such as the number of LCUs used and the respective node name, are contained in the instrument configuration files located inside the $INS_ROOT (see chapter 8).

Note: In the target host at Paranal, the INTROOT and INS_ROOT environment variables should be defined in the PECS locality file of the host (pecsvltcs-apps-`hostname`.env).
