NGAS Installation Instructions

Introduction

The installation procedure described here is based on a kickstart installation script and an installation script provided by the NGAS project. After having executed these two steps, an operational NGAS system should be obtained.

The NGAS Linux distribution is installed from a DVD hosting the ISO image and other pertinent files.

The NGAS Package can either be installed from a WEB server or from a CDROM inserted in the node to be installed.

Installation of the NGAS Linux Distribution

To install the NGAS Linux ISO image, do as follows:

1. Remove all disks in the node. 2. Insert the NGAS Linux ISO DVD in the DVD reader of the node.
3. Reboot the node, ensure that the boot sequence in the BIOS will make the PC boot from the DVD.
4. When the Scientific Linux boot ("boot>") prompt appears, type the following:

boot> linux ks=cdrom ip=134.171.<Subnet>.<Address> gateway=134.171.<Subnet>.199
hostname=<Fully qualified hostname(*)> nameserver=<IP address(**)>

4. Subsequently the passwords for the user root, ngas and ngasmgr might be redefined manually:

# passwd ngas
# passwd ngasmgr

*: hostname: Fully qualified hostname, e.g. "jewel2.hq.eso.org".

**: nameserver: Supply the IP address of the local nameserver. For Garching: 134.171.56.56. For Paranal: No name server is available, this parameter can be ommitted. For LS: 134.171.80.251.

Installation of NGAS Package

The steps to carry out to install the NGAS Package and carry out the rest of the configuration of the node, is as follows:

1. Insert the CDROM with the appropriate NGAS Distribution into the CDROM drive (*) of the node.
2. Mount the CROM drive it as root:

# mkdir /mnt/install
# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/install

3. Enter the NGAS Distribution Folder (e.g.):

# cd /mnt/install/NGAS-PACKAGE/<Version>

4. Execute the installation tool. Note a number of predefined commands are found in the Distribution folder for this. For instance to install an Archiving Unit at Paranal:

# . INSTALL-CMD-PL-NAU

To check for other available commands, type:

# ls INSTALL-CMD-*

5. Reboot the node and observe if NGAS is started and behaves as expected.

It is possible to install only the NGAS Package on an existing NGAS System, by means of the NGAS Installation Script. Look in one of the predefined installation commands how to invoke this tool, or invoke it on the command line to get the online help.

It is also possible to make the NGAS Installation Tool download all the distribution files from a WEB server. If this is done, the "--src-url" parameter, should point to the given URL, e.g. "--src-url=http://www.eso.org/~jknudstr/NGAS/RELEASES/V3_1_SL43".

*: It is in principle also possible to install from a USB device, or to copy over the folder containing the package and install from that.
