Henri Boffin – Science - Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence

I use some machine learning techniques for my research, in particular clustering algorithms, when studying open clusters and their tidal arms.

I have also a keen interest in following up the field of artificial intelligence, and I have therefore organised what was likely the first (in the modern era) workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Astronomy. A report is available. A few years later, I organised the ESO/ESA Sciops 2022: Artificial Intelligence for Science and Operations in Astronomy.

I am also following closely the impact of Large Language Models on how we do science. With Giacomo Beccari, I organised n September 2024 another ESO workshop on the use of these tools in astronomy. The report summarising the outcome of the meeting was published in Nature Astronomy and is available here, while the very interesting talks can be watched on YouTube.

With Tereza Jerabkova, I also made a study of the impact of ChatGPT on the writing and analysis of observing proposals, with quite surprising and somewhat scary results. Of course, the field of LLMs is moving so fast that what was true in 2024 may not apply any more. However, the main question as to whether we should be using these tools remains valid.
