General structure
The MIDAS system is built as a hierarchical directory tree containing
installation procedures, source code and
documentation .
The top directory is named after the release month (e.g. 90NOV for the November release of 1990) and is put directly under the
MIDAS home directory. New releases can be added as additional branches
under the MIDAS home directory. Both the MIDAS home
directory and the
top directory must be stored in environment variables2.1. MIDASHOME should contain the MIDAS home directory (e.g. /home/ns2b/midas for UNIX); MIDVERS should contain the name of
the top directory of the release (e.g. 91NOV).
In this chapter, the local path of a MIDAS release is abbreviated as
Mv which is $MIDASHOME/$MIDVERS for UNIX or MID_DISK:['MIDASHOME'.'MIDVERS'] for VAX/VMS where MID_DISK
is the logical name to the disk. The UNIX style for the directory path
of files is used in this chapter (e.g. /midas/94NOV/doc/env)
rather than VAX/VMS style. In the following subsections the main
directory structure and naming conventions for files are explained.
