Bias frames are acquired daily as part of MUSE daily
calibrations. The template consists of 11 input frames. As of
2017-06-14 the frames are taken in the instrumental setup WFM (WideFieldMode), AO
(AdaptiveOptics mode), N_Blue-Na2 (Nominal wavelenght range with Blue
Na2 filter used in AO mode), SCII1.0 (readout mode). Before then, the
Bias frames were acquired in the WFM-NOAO-N_Blue mode.

Raw BIAS frame, IFU 5, This is an example of a
typical raw bias frame, here, for IFU (or CHANEL) 5
(EXTNAME=CHAN05). The full bias frame contains 24 of such extensions -
one extension for each of the 24 channels of MUSE.

February 2014 | Bias calibrations are taken regularly |
June 2014 | With change of the pipeline version (from muse_0.15 to muse_0.18) calculation of the bias median was modified. The level is determined after subtracting overscan (overscan is fitted first then subtracted). The values changed from around 1200 ADU to 0.05 ADU. |
2015-03-31 | CHAN01 detector vessel exchanged, DET.CHIP.ID changed from psyche to egeria |

Algorithm BIAS level
The master bias is combined over several (11) input frames. The median
level of the master bias is calculated for each
quadrant (independent read-out ports), per detector (i.e. channel/IFU).
Read noise (master)
Several separate bias images are combined into one master bias file.
The master bias contains the combined pixel values, in ADU, of the raw
bias exposures, with respect to the image combination method used
(sigclip). Processing trims the raw data and records the overscan
statistics, corrects the data levels using the overscan (if overscan
is not "none") and combines the exposures using input parameters. The
read-out noise is computed for each quadrant of the master bias for
each detector (IFU).

Algorithm Read noise (master)
Read-out noise in quadrant n (n=1,2,3,4) is determined
from difference images of each adjacent pair of biases in the
input dataset in randomly placed windows.
Trending
Read-out noise is trended for each quadrant and each IFU
(detector). Only data taken with read-out mode SCI1.0 are
selected. Plot RON_master shows the average and the standard deviation
for each quadrant across all 24 IFUs (detectors) as a quick overview
of the global behaviour. The other plot, RON_det, shows read-out-noise
in each quadrant in each detector.
Scoring&thresholds Read noise (master)
The read-out-noise per quadrant, averaged over all the
detectors, is tightly scored, with dynamic thresholds
following the median average.

2015-10-31 | After intervention (detectors warmed up and vacuum recreated in the transfer lines) improved RON values in almost all channels/quadrants; The worst degradation is in channel 23 which shows a higher RON by 6%; The largest improvement is in channel 20 by 14%. PPRS-063339 |

Bias detector temperature
The MUSE BIAS frames contain information about
temperature of each detector. This is monitored.
