Instrument modes
This page lists the instrument modes relevant for providing the DFO statistics.

The statistics tables should split by the entries under 'MODE'. These are 'logical' modes. There is no general strict rule which FITS keywords to read for defining the logical modes. The purpose of this table is to list the criteria for each instrument.

General notes:

  • we don't count technical frames, TEST frames.
  • we do count ACQUISITION frames.
  • we count VM CALIB frames only if they have been processed.
  • we count SCIENCE frames only if taken in SM.
  • the DET mode counts BIAS, DARK and PARASITIC frames.
  • logical modes usually split further by e.g. filters, read modes etc. These are considered 'flavours' or attributes and need not be counted separately.
  • we count frames on the basis of their FITS header keywords or database entries. If they have wrong entries, we don't try to correct the statistics for that.

GIRAFFE/FLAMES GIRAFFE has three modes with separate data streams: Medusa = MOS, IFU, ARGUS. There is also the DET mode for BIAS and DARK frames. There are also technical calibrations with lamps in IMAGE mode which are not counted here.

NACO NACO has just one dfo-supported mode, IMG. There are also SPECTRUM, CORONOGRAPHY and POLARIMETRY data taken in VM.

UVES (solo)

UVES (solo, in contrast to UVES/FLAMES which has additional components) has the ECH mode for CALIB data. SCIENCE data come in ECH and in SLIC mode but share the same set of ECH calibration data.

All UVES data use the same set of DET (BIAS, DARK) files.

UVES/FLAMES Also called UVES-FIBRE. This is a combination of UVES and the FLAMES fibre facility. UVES-FIBRE uses the DET calibrations from UVES.
