Satellite trail count simulators

This page links to two webtools based on the analytical simulation method we published in Bassa, Hainaut, Galadi 2022 AA 657 A75 PDF, DOI 10.1051/0004-6361/202142101.

Both of them compute the number of satellite trails that will be detected in an exposure, taking into account the field-of-view of the instrument, the exposure time, and the position of the observatory.

  • Sky map simulator: trail counts over the whole sky at a given time.
  • Calendar simulator: trail counts for a given astronomical object as a function of time over the whole year.

The simulators have more parameters than those exposed here (for example, to account for spectrographs, or the magnitude that heavily saturates an exposure). They can also convert the number of trails in observation losses (in percent).

Also, please do not access these simulators via script: either contact us, or get the code from GitHub.

A slightly different implementation of the algorithms is also available on Cees Bassa's GitHub repository GitHub repository.
