Oral title: HARPS: the missing link between 1 km/s and 1 cm/s Oral abstract: HARPS was the first instrument to demonstrate that achieving m/s radial-velocity precision was possible and critical for the domain of extra-solar planets. In my talk I will present the concepts that have been critical in reaching the m/s precision, and discuss how HARPS influenced a new generation of instrument builders. I will finally describe how HARPS has eventually driven the construction of ESPRESSO and provided the ideas for a high-resolution visible spectrograph for the ELT.
