Modelling, analysis and test support related to vibration and control/structure interaction for the ELT telescope structure and hosted units
The following tasks are available, but only a subset (to be agreed jointly) is to be carried out within the internship period:
1. Adaptation to the tools available in the Directorate of engineering related to Mechanical and Control simulations.
2. M1 Manipulator on the handling crane, assistance on:
2.1 Integration of the finite element models developed by contractors for the Manipulator and Main Structure and building the system mechanical model.
2.2 Building a flexible multibody dynamics model (with dynamics represented by state space models) for dynamics simulation especially for seismic events.
2.3 Perform seismic simulations with this model to verify loads on the manipulator and segment assembly.
3. Seismic simulation of ELT Instruments on the ELT Main Structure:
3.1 Check different approaches to combine FE models provided by consortia for the instruments with the ELT Main Structure FE model (e.g. develop a representative simplified model from the detailed instrument model or Component Mode Synthesis (CMS)).
3.2 Generate a combined model of ELT with Instruments.
3.3 Perform different simulation to check earthquakes: response spectrum analysis and direct time simulations (using a reduced state space model).
4. Development of the simplified models of the hosted units of the ELT telescope.
5. Provide support with for vibration testing, measurement and simulation:
5.1. Perform vibration characterization of different active systems by measurements in the laboratory.
5.2. Cross check vibration measurements with models and simulations.
5.3. Develop a strategy for placing sensors in the ELT for vibration monitoring.
6. Develop Matlab or Phython routines to extract CFD data stored by Fluent in HDF5 files to allow access in Matlab.
7. Generation (and update) of a finite element model in Ansys Workbench for the Very Large Telescope (VLT UT) according to CAD models and drawings.
