The double main sequence of Omega Centauri

Two distinct populations of stars are present in the globular cluster Omega Centauri, recognisable in this colour-brightness diagram that is based on data obtained via the HST image shown in ESO ESO Press Photo eso0509. The stars coloured in blue and in red are those for which a spectrum was acquired with the VLT.
