Construction of the ELT in Chile

The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is under construction, when completed it will be the world's largest optical/near-infrared eye on the sky. It is located on top the Cerro Armazones in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is expected to take 11 years to construct and is designed to make observations that advance astrophysical knowledge of exoplanets, the first galaxies in the Universe and supermassive black holes.
