A herd of antennae
The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) — a state-of-the-art telescope to study light from some of the coldest objects in the Universe — operates high on the Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. ALMA comprises 66 high-precision antennae, each weighing in at over 100 tons. Unusual clouds obscure the sky, and a hard frost twinkles from the ground. This image is captured at a sufficient distance to include most of the antennae, giving them an almost animal quality — they appear so be huddling together in a pack for warmth.
