Firmato il contratto per i nuovi ricevitori di ALMA
ALMA amplia la sua capacità di studiare le molecole nell'Universo

È stato firmato il contratto per la produzione della serie finale di ricevitori da installare su ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array). ALMA, di cui ESO è partner, osserva l'Universo in un intervallo di lunghezze d'onda radio nelle regioni millimetriche e submillimetriche dello spettro elettromagnetico. Ciascuna delle 66 antenne di ALMA è dotata di diversi ricevitori di onde radio molto sensibili, ciascuno ricettivo a un particolare intervallo di lunghezze d'onda. I nuovi ricevitori, o meglio le cartucce di ricevitori di Banda 2, consentiranno ad ALMA di raccogliere lunghezze d'onda comprese tra 2,6 e 4,5 mm.
Dopo il successo di alcuni test su un prototipo di cartuccia di ricevitori di Banda 2, il Consiglio di ALMA ha approvato la fase di pre-produzione che riguarda una serie di sei cartucce, con l'obiettivo di passare infine alla produzione del set completo, una per ciascuna delle antenne di ALMA. Ciò dipenderà dalla verifica delle prestazioni e dalla possibilità di produzione in serie sulla base dei risultati della pre-produzione.
Con queste nuove cartucce di ricevitori, ALMA diventerà uno strumento scientifico ancora più versatile. Diventeranno infatti possibili importanti misure del mezzo interstellare freddo, la tenue miscela di materia e radiazione che riempie lo spazio tra le stelle. Nella Banda 2, ALMA sarà anche in grado di studiare le proprietà della polvere in molti diversi ambienti astronomici, dai dischi di formazione planetaria alle galassie, e sarà in grado di estendere le proprie capacità di osservazione all'Universo ad alto redshift. Più vicino a noi, la Banda 2 consentirà l'osservazione di molecole complesse e pesanti nell'Universo locale.
La produzione delle cartucce di ricevitori di Banda 2 sarà intrapresa da un consorzio che comprende la Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA), la Chalmers University di Göteborg, Svezia e l'Istituto nazionale di astrofisica (INAF) italiano. L'Osservatorio nazionale astronomico del Giappone (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan; NAOJ) contribuirà alla produzione e al collaudo dell'ottica dei ricevitori come contributo dell'Asia orientale al programma di sviluppo di ALMA. L'Osservatorio Nazionale di Radioastronomia (National Radio Astronomy Observatory; NRAO) e l'Università del Cile sono stati coinvolti nello sviluppo e nella produzione di alcuni componenti dei ricevitori, che saranno inviati all'ESO per i collaudi e l'integrazione.
