Francesca Primas, de l'ESO, récompensée pour sa contribution à la promotion de l'égalité entre les hommes et les femmes

Francesca Primas, astronome à l'ESO, a reçu le premier prix Nancy Grace Roman décerné par la Société astronomique du Pacifique (ASP). Francesca Primas est la première personne à recevoir ce prix, qui a été créé cette année pour récompenser une "personne ou un groupe pour ses contributions significatives à la promotion de l'égalité des sexes et de l'inclusion dans l'astronomie et les domaines connexes".
Francesca Primas est une astrophysicienne de renom qui étudie l'évolution chimique de la Voie lactée et de ses galaxies satellites. Elle est également une pionnière dans la promotion de l'égalité des sexes dans l'astronomie en général et à l'ESO en particulier.
Il y a une quinzaine d'années, elle a mené une étude sur le statut des femmes à l'ESO afin d'évaluer la répartition des sexes au sein de l'organisation. Les résultats ont été décevants, puisque l'étude n'a révélé que 18 % de femmes parmi les membres du personnel, mais ils ont servi de base aux discussions et aux actions futures visant à promouvoir la diversité, l'équité et l'inclusion à l'ESO. Francesca Primas a mené une grande partie de ce travail, notamment en cofondant le comité de diversité et d'inclusion de l'ESO. Depuis lors, le pourcentage de personnel identifié comme féminin est passé à plus de 26 %, et l'ESO a l'intention d'augmenter encore ce pourcentage.
Francesca Primas a également été conseillère puis présidente du groupe de travail de l'Union astronomique internationale (UAI) sur les femmes dans l'astronomie. Elle a notamment dirigé le projet AstroVoices de l'UAI, qui a permis à plus de 600 femmes astronomes et étudiantes de plus de 60 pays de partager leur passion pour l'astronomie et d'encourager les jeunes filles à suivre leur voie.
En 2022, elle a été nommée membre du Conseil international de la science, un programme qui reconnaît les individus pour leur contribution exceptionnelle à la promotion de la science en tant que bien public mondial. En outre, elle a joué un rôle actif dans la promotion de l'égalité des sexes en organisant et en participant à de nombreux groupes de travail et panels sur ce sujet.
Francesca Primas recevra son prix lors du gala de remise des prix de l'ASP, le 11 novembre, dans la baie de San Francisco, en Californie (États-Unis).
