Welche Wirkung die ESO auf die Gesellschaft hat: Neue Publikation hebt den Nutzen der ESO für ihre Mitgliedsländer hervor

Die Europäische Südsternwarte (ESO) ist ein Paradebeispiel für Forschung, Innovation und Zusammenarbeit in Europa mit weitreichender und unschätzbarer Wirkung auf die Gesellschaft. Die neue Veröffentlichung ESO’s Benefits to Society untersucht den Beitrag, den die ESO in ihren Mitgliedsstaaten leistet, in fünf Bereichen: Wissenschaft und Technik, Wirtschaft und Innovation, Talententwicklung, Bildung und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit sowie internationale Zusammenarbeit und Politik.
In Wissenschaft und Technik waren die ESO und ihre Teleskope maßgeblich an mehreren bahnbrechenden Entdeckungen beteiligt. 2020 wurde zum Beispiel ein Physik-Nobelpreis für die Erforschung des Schwarzen Lochs in der Milchstraße mit ESO-Teleskopen verliehen. Die ESO ermöglicht solche Entdeckungen durch den Bau und den Betrieb weltweit führender Observatorien, die die Grenzen der Technik überschreiten.
Die Innovationen der ESO gehen über den Aufgabenbereich der Organisation hinaus. So werden zum Beispiel Verfahren von MUSE, einem Instrument des Very Large Telescopes der ESO, auf den Gebrauch in der Medizin- und Krebsdiagnostik übertragen. Die ESO bietet der Gesellschaft auch wirtschaftliche Vorteile. 2019 wurden 60 Prozent des ESO-Budgets in die Konstruktion und den Bau von Teleskopen und Instrumenten investiert. Mehr als 90 Prozent davon flossen in Hightech-Innovationen, die von der Industrie und den Forschungseinrichtungen in den Mitgliedsländern geleitet wurden.
In der Talententwicklung hat die ESO eine entscheidende Rolle für die Karriere hochqualifizierter Astronomen, Ingenieure und Technikexperten gespielt. Allein in den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat die ESO mehr als 260 Studierende aus 40 Ländern in Wissenschaft und Technik ausgebildet. Diese Expertise findet auch in andere Bereiche von Industrie und öffentlichem Leben Eingang, denn ESO-Alumni schlagen Laufbahnen in Bildung, Geschäftsentwicklung, Programm- und Projektmanagement sowie Medien und Kommunikation ein.
Die Aktivitäten der ESO im Bereich Kommunikation, Bildung und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit nutzen die angeborene Neugier auf das Universum, um die wissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse der Gesellschaft zu erweitern und um mehr Kinder dafür zu begeistern, sich in den Bereichen Wissenschaft, Technologie, Ingenieurswesen und Mathematik zu engagieren. In den vergangenen zehn Jahren wurde die ESO pro Tag in durchschnittlich 46 Online-Pressemitteilungen erwähnt, und seit 2018 hat das ESO Supernova Planetarium & Besucherzentrum 132.000 Besucher in Planetariums-Shows und 13.000 Besucher bei Führungen empfangen.
Als eine internationale Organisation der Zusammenarbeit ist die ESO in der Lage, Länder zusammenzubringen, um ein wissenschaftliches und politisches Entwicklungspotential zu schaffen, das außerhalb der Reichweite ihrer einzelnen Mitgliedsstaaten liegt. Die ESO ist daher ein Vorbild in Forschung und Entwicklung und sie ist ein Eckpfeiler des Europäischen Forschungsraums für Astronomie.
Alle Beiträge der ESO zur Gesellschaft sind perfekt im Bau des ambitionierten und revolutionären Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) veranschaulicht, dem entstehenden Flaggschiff-Teleskop der ESO, das in diesem Jahrzehnt erstes Licht sehen soll. Das ELT der ESO wird unser Wissen über das Universum dramatisch verändern und uns dazu bringen, unseren Platz im Kosmos zu überdenken.
„Die ESO hat der europäischen und globalen Gemeinschaft drei Hauptvorteile gebracht: erstens, ein Weltklasse-Observatoriumssystem, das für nationale Astronomiegemeinschaften im Hinblick auf ihre Operationen und Optionen für die Instrumentierung sowie die Möglichkeiten, nationale Projekte in dem Observatorium durchzuführen, viele Effizienzgewinne bringt; zweitens, große Erfahrung im Management von Megaprojekten in der Astronomie; und drittens, einen stabilen Rahmen, der es den Ländern erlaubt, Ressourcen fair zu bündeln, um diese weltweit führenden Projekte zu ermöglichen. Ein Projekt wie das ELT ist nur in Europa mit der ESO möglich“, sagt Nobelpreisträger Didier Queloz.
