ALMA utforskar en kosmisk manet
Genom att kombinera de skarpögda Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) och ESO:s Very Large Telescope (VLT) har astronomerna kunnat kartlägga gasströmmarna från "Manetgalaxen", en spiralgalax med beteckningen ESO 137-001 i stjärnbilden Vinkelhaken (Norma).
På veckans bild ses detta kosmiska blötdjur i all sin detaljrikedom. Olika komponenter i bilden har fångats av olika teleskop. Galaxen och dess omgivning avbildades av NASA/ESA:s Hubbleteleskop, svansen av vätgas (lila) observerades av MUSE-instrumentet på VLT medan fläckarna av koldioxid (orange) kartlades av ALMA.
Gassvansen bildas när galaxen rör sig genom gasen i den intergalaktiska rymden som bjuder rörelsen på ett motstånd, ungefär som när håret flyger bakåt när man färdas i en öppen sportbil. När galaxen rör sig genom rymden slits gasen bort från galaxen och bildar vackra, intrikata mönster av det slag som ses här. Svansens riktning och läge avslöjar åt vilket håll galaxen rör sig genom rymden – de faller oftast mot centrum i den galaxhop de befinner sig, så även ESO 137-001.
Bilden utgör den första kartan i hög upplösning som har gjorts av kall molekylär gas i ett sådant system. ESO 137-001 är en av de närmaste manetgalaxerna och av särskilt stort intresse då dess långa svans innehåller formationer som går under beteckningen "eldbollar" – områden med intensiv stjärnbildning. Exakt hur stjärnbildningsprocessen går till i dessa manetgalaxer är oklart, men kartan ger en ny inblick i fenomenet som kanske kan hjälpa till att lösa gåtan.
ALMA består av 66 antenner på den 5 000 meter höga Chajnantorplatån i Chiles Atacamaöken. ALMA studerar himlen från en plats långt från civilisationen för att utröna hur universums märkligheter – inklusive manetgalaxen ESO 137-001 – bildades och utvecklades.
