Ett 340-miljoner pixlars stjärnlandskap från Paranal
Den andra av de tre bilderna i ESO:s projekt GigaGalaxy Zoom är en ny, häftig, 340-megapixel stor vy mot Vintergatans mitt, sedd från ESO:s Paranal-observatorium med ett amatörteleskop. Bilden täcker ett 34 gånger 20 grader stort område på himlen och ger ett smakprov av universum som det upplevs av världens mest erfarna amatörastronomer. Den praktfulla bilden har tillkommit tack vare den optimala observationsplatsen och skickligheten hos fotografen, Stéphane Guisard, som är både världskänd astrofotograf och ingenjör hos ESO. Det är inte bara en av världens klaraste natthimlar som gör bilden, utan även att Guisard använt sin expertis som optisk ingenjör och specialist på teleskop. Bilden visar upp himlen mellan stjärnbildarna Skytten och Skorpionen. Till höger syns det färggranna området kring stjärnorna Rho Ophiuchi och Antares, samt mörkare partier som Pipnebulosan och Ormnebulosan. Vintergatans mörka stråk av stoft och damm sneddar över bilden, avbruten av märkliga, ljusröda gasmoln, bland dem Lagunnebulosan, Trifidnebulosan, samt NGC 6357 och NGC 6334. Här i det mörka bandet ligger även Vintergatans mittpunkt där ett supertungt svart hål lurar. Bilden skapades med ett 10-centimeters Takahashi FSQ106Ed f/3.6-teleskop och en SBIG STL-ccd-camera på en NJP160-montering. Bilderna togs genom tre olika filter (B, V och R) och lades sedan ihop. Mosaikbilden är gjord av 52 olika himmelsfält och totalt cirka 1200 enskilda exponeringar med en sammanlagd exponeringstid på 200 timmar. Den slutgiltiga bilden, som är på 24 403 × 13 973 pixlar, finns bara tillgängligt direkt från Stéphane Guisard.
