A winding road through the Atacama Desert

This image shows a metallic dome on top of a mountain, against the landscape of the Chilean desert. There are cranes and other construction equipment around it, as well as a road winding down the mountain leading to a collection of buildings.

This drone image from June 2024 shows ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) dome against the brilliant landscape of the Atacama Desert, Chile. The winding road leading down the mountain, Cerro Armazones, leads to the basecamp for the construction staff. There, large parts of the ELT structure - such as the sliding doors - are pre-assembled and driven up the mountain to join the dome.
