Francesca Primas do ESO reconhecida por promover a igualdade de género

Francesca Primas, astrónoma do ESO, foi distinguida com o prémio inaugural Nancy Grace Roman Award da Sociedade Astronómica do Pacífico (Astronomical Society of the Pacific, ASP). Trata-se da primeira pessoa a receber este prémio, que foi introduzido este ano com o intuito de reconhecer um "indivíduo ou grupo de indivíduos pelas suas contribuições significativas para a promoção da igualdade de género e da inclusão na astronomia e áreas afins".
Francesca Primas é uma astrofísica de renome que investiga a evolução química da Via Láctea e das suas galáxias satélite. É também pioneira na promoção da igualdade de género na astronomia, em geral, e no ESO, em particular.
Há cerca de 15 anos, Francesca realizou um estudo sobre a situação das mulheres no ESO que tinha como objetivo avaliar a distribuição dos géneros na organização. Os resultados foram decepcionantes, tendo-se revelado que apenas 18% dos membros do pessoal eram mulheres. No entanto, estes resultados serviram de base para debate e futuras ações de promoção da diversidade, equidade e inclusão no ESO. Francesca Primas liderou grande parte deste trabalho, incluindo a co-fundação do Comité de Diversidade e Inclusão do ESO. Desde então, a percentagem de pessoal do sexo feminino aumentou para mais de 26%, sendo o objetivo do ESO aumentar ainda mais esta percentagem.
Francesca Primas foi também conselheira e depois presidente do Grupo de Trabalho sobre Mulheres na Astronomia da União Astronómica Internacional (IAU). Em particular, liderou o projeto AstroVoices da IAU, que deu a mais de 600 astrónomas e estudantes de mais de 60 países a oportunidade de partilhar a sua paixão pela astronomia, encorajando assim jovens raparigas a seguir este caminho.
Em 2022, Francesca foi nomeada Fellow do Conselho Internacional de Ciência, o qual reconhece indivíduos pelas suas contribuições excecionais para a promoção da ciência como um bem público global. Além disso, tem sido uma voz ativa na promoção da igualdade de género, organizando e participando em numerosos grupos de trabalho e painéis sobre este tema.
Primas receberá o seu prémio na Gala de Prémios da ASP, que decorrerá no dia 11 de Novembro, na área da Baía de São Francisco, na Califórnia, EUA.
