Assinado contrato para a Estação Pré-focal do ELT

O ESO assinou um contrato com a companhia espanhola IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture SAU para a produção de um componente principal do Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) do ESO. A Estação Pré-focal irá levar a luz colectada pelo enorme sistema óptico do telescópio até aos instrumentos científicos e outros equipamentos de teste. Esta estação albergará igualmente partes do sistema de óptica ativa do telescópio [1].
O contrato foi assinado por Luis Rodríguez, Presidente da IDOM, e por Xavier Barcons, Diretor Geral do ESO, numa cerimónia que teve lugar na Sede do ESO em Garching, na Alemanha, no dia 21 de Março de 2018. Para além dos representantes da empresa e pessoal do ESO, esteve também presente no evento o Cônsul Geral de Espanha em Munique, Francisco Pascual de la Parte.
A Estação Pré-focal é uma enorme estrutura, com mais de 12 metros de altura, que ficará colocada numa das duas plataformas que se situarão ao lado da estrutura tubular gigante do ELT. Trata-se do último componente opto-mecânico antes da radiação colectada pelo telescópio chegar ao foco, daí o seu nome.
A Estação Pré-focal contém três braços mecânicos móveis que podem captar a luz das estrelas. Estes braços contêm sensores que ajudam o telescópio a apontar de forma precisa para os objetos no céu. Fornecem também informação ao sistema de óptica ativa, o qual mantém a óptica do telescópio alinhada, produzindo imagens de máxima qualidade apesar dos efeitos de variação de vento e outros distúrbios no telescópio.
A Estação Pré-focal inclui ainda um grande espelho plano móvel que reflete a luz nos enormes instrumentos científicos que serão montados um de cada lado (HARMONI e METIS) e por trás da Estação Pré-focal (MAORY e MICADO). Um segundo espelho destacável está também disponível para levar a radiação colectada a instrumentos científicos futuros, assim como para testar e diagnosticar o sistema.

[1] O contrato cobre formalmente o Sistema Principal da Estação Pré-focal A. Contém também uma opção para a possível futura construção de uma estação similar para a plataforma dos outros instrumentos do ELT, situada no lado oposto do tubo do telescópio. O sistema principal faz parte de um sistema maior que contém componentes adicionais, tais como sistemas de equipamentos de testes, equipamentos de metrologia e detectores.
