ESPRESSO vê luz ao fundo do túnel
Um grande passo em frente para o novo espectrógrafo de alta resolução do VLT

Pela primeira vez radiação estelar colectada por um dos Telescópios Principais que compõem o Very Large Telescope do ESO (VLT) foi encaminhada com sucesso durante 60 metros ao longo de um túnel que leva a um novo foco no laboratório subterrâneo situado por baixo da plataforma do VLT. Quando o sistema estiver completamente operacional, a radiação colectada pelos 4 Telescópios Principais será levada até esse “ponto de convergência”, onde o espectrógrafo de alta resolução ESPRESSO (acrónimo do inglês para Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations) será colocado em 2017, de modo a obter e analisar a radiação combinada colectada pelos telescópios individuais. Desde modo, os Telescópios Principais, cada um com 8 metros de diâmetro, operarão em conjunto com um poder colector semelhante a um único telescópio de 16 metros de diâmetro. Quando os 4 telescópios não forem necessários, pode-se igualmente utilizar o ESPRESSO apenas com um deles.
Para levar a radiação colectada pelo telescópio a um novo foco, um novo sistema óptico muito complexo foi concebido e instalado pelo parceiro português do Consórcio ESPRESSO. A qualidade das imagens colectadas no “ponto de convergência” é excelente, satisfazendo assim as especificações desafiantes impostas pelos objetivos científicos ambiciosos do instrumento.
Trata-se de um primeiro passo bastante significativo e encorajador no desenvolvimento do ESPRESSO, um instrumento altamente sofisticado, que representa um enorme sucesso para a equipa de engenheiros e astrónomos que trabalham neste instrumento. Este resultado inicial dá à equipa uma enorme confiança relativamente ao desempenho que será eventualmente alcançado pelo ESPRESSO. Nos próximos meses, os restantes 3 Telescópios Principais serão ligados ao ponto focal e finalmente o próprio instrumento será instalado e as observações poderão começar.
O ESPRESSO está a ser desenvolvido pelo Consórcio ESPRESSO desde há 6 anos. Vem no seguimento do enorme sucesso do instrumento HARPS, montado no telescópio de 3,6 metros do ESO, instalado no Observatório de La Silla, e leva a espectroscopia de alta resolução ao VLT. A sensibilidade do ESPRESSO faz com que este seja um instrumento indispensável na procura de planetas rochosos do tipo da Terra, em órbita de sistemas estelares distantes. O instrumento poderá também fazer medições precisas das constantes fundamentais da física no Universo, procurando em particular quaisquer variações no tempo destas constantes, e estudará em pormenor as composições químicas de estrelas em galáxias distantes.
