Nowa klasa galaktyk została zidentyfikowana dzięki obserwacjom Bardzo Dużego Teleskopu (VLT, należącego do ESO) , teleskopu Gemini South oraz Teleskopu Kanadyjsko-Francusko-Hawajskiego (CFHT). Nazwane obrazowo „galaktykami zielonej fasoli”, z powodu swojego nietypowego wyglądu, galaktyki te świecą w intensywnym świetle emitowanym z okolic potężnych czarnych dziur i należą do najrzadszych obiektów we Wszechświecie.
