Dear Friends,
This will be the last edition of our Outreach Community Newsletter for this year. 2011 has been yet another fruitful year for ESO. The organisation saw a number of significant steps forward in its mission to build and operate world-class ground-based telescopes and, in terms of scientific discoveries, ESO once again confirmed its position at the forefront of ground-based astronomy.
In the area of outreach, we have taken a big step forward by significantly improving our product distribution system and we hope that you will start to benefit from these changes in 2012. As you are undoubtedly aware we have as part of this launched a suite of newsletters to keep you better informed of all our activities. We have expanded our networks of collaborators and we are always on the lookout for new members of this invaluable list of contacts. Another of the many activities this year was the ESO Open House Day, when, among many other activities, we built a full-size mock-up of the 40-metre mirror of the E-ELT.
Some of us were fortunate to spend time with many of you in Beijing for the Communicating Astronomy with the Public Conference 2011 and we are looking forward to the next in this series already. Speaking of which — a new issue of the Communicating Astronomy with the Public journal is in preparation at the moment. Keep sharing your insights with the community!
All in all it has been a very exciting year in the world of communicating astronomy. We look forward to 2012 when we here at ESO celebrate 50 years of ESO, and to the many expected and unexpected new challenges in connection with this big event. We would like to thank you for joining us in our efforts to bring astronomy closer to people and to congratulate you on all your successful activities during 2011. We hope that the new year will brings you even greater achievements.
