Dear Fellow Communicators,
After a brilliant Indian Summer here, autumn has arrived in force in Garching. September is keeping us busy organising the ESO Open House Day. If you are in the Munich area on 22 October, we invite you to visit us at our Headquarters in Garching bei München. We open our site for visits only once a year, at least until 2017 when we open the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre!
The ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre will be the first open-source planetarium in the world. We are working towards this goal by populating our online archives with all the materials we are producing for our planetarium. The most recent additions to our collection are VR movies. These 360 x 180 degree immersive experience movies are a new product type that can be used with Virtual Reality (VR) glasses like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Google Cardboard. The first movie is the amazing CLUES simulation in 16k x 8k format produced by Adler Planetarium. This must be one of the highest resolution VR movies available anywhere (and certainly for free). As usual you will also discover new products in our archives: fulldome clips, 360-degree panoramas, music and more.
On a different note, ESO has taken some steps into the STEAM area (Science Technology Engineering, Art and Maths). You can learn more about this topic on our newly opened web page Art at ESO.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
