Dear Fellow Communicators,
Happy New Year! We hope you that enjoyed the winter holidays and are ready for a fruitful 2016 —we certainly are!
We would like to share with you the news of an exciting outreach campaign — Pale Red Dot — that gives you and the public the chance to follow the live search for an exoplanet around Proxima Centauri — our nearest star. It is unusual for astronomers to share the “live observing” part of the scientific process with the public, as they normally communicate only after a paper has been published. However, the team we have partnered with is courageous enough to do things differently and shed light on how the observations actually take place, in real time. We will not reveal the results before a paper is published, but we believe that sharing how the journey goes can be as exciting as what the destination will be. Read more here.
If you have not seen it, check out the new Space Scoop website — the astronomy news service for children aged eight and above. Every Space Scoop article provides news about the latest astronomical discoveries in child-friendly language and is accompanied by a stunning astronomical image. The goal is to feed children’s curiosity about the Universe, to share the excitement of new discoveries with them and to inspire children to develop an interest in science and a passion for learning. Space Scoop is coordinated by the international Universe Awareness (EU-UNAWE) and Space Awareness (SPACE-AWE) projects in association with several partners, including ESO and ESA/Hubble.
We are delighted to announce that we have entered into partnership with the Royal Observatory Greenwich for their Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. Our Community Coordinator, Oana Sandu, will be a jury member in the competition. We look forward to seeing the submissions this year and encourage you to spread the word about the competition to your audiences! Read more here.
We end our first 2016 newsletter, reminding you once more of the Communicating Astronomy with the Public 2016 Conference. What better time is there to invest in your career than the beginning of the year? The abstract deadline is in just a few days and the early bird registration period will also close. So hurry up! Follow the Facebook page, #CAP2016 and the website for more details.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
