Dear Fellow Communicators,
September is here and things are starting to look busier and busier. If you are a secondary school teacher who just started a new school year, we recommend that you tell your students, aged 16–18, about the third ESO Astronomy Camp. They will have the time of their life exploring the topics about the Solar System and exoplanets, as well as making friends and doing winter sports activities in the beautiful region of the Aosta Valley, Italy.
Also useful for teachers, is the latest edition of Science in School, where you can learn, among other things, about how to do physics experiments with your students using Kinder Surprise® chocolate eggs. We have also released some educational material on ALMA, which gives you an overview of the history of radio astronomy leading up to ALMA, and sections on the physics of radio astronomy and how radio astronomy is used to explore our cosmic origins. Find out more here.
Check out the short animations we have released on the evolution of mirrors in astronomy over time. We also take this opportunity to let you know that several sets of subtitles are now available for the From Earth to the Universe planetarium show, with more coming up. Send us your translation in your own language.
If you work for a museum and this end of September finds you in Tokyo, Japan, we recommend signing up for the International Symposium on the NAOJ Museum. The event takes place between 27 and 29 September at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and it will be exploring topics of interest for museums. If you want to find out about more events relevant for the outreach community we recommend the IAU Outreach Newsletter.
Finally, though the autumn is just starting, it’s never too early to secure your 2016 edition of the ESO Calendar from the ESOshop.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
