Dear Fellow Communicators,
On behalf of ESO and ePOD, we wish you Merry Holidays and a Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful 2014, with successful and rewarding outreach activities. Get ready for another exciting year, as there are many opportunities to celebrate astronomy in 2015!
One of them is Hubble’s 25th anniversary! We have prepared several activities to mark the event, including Ode to Hubble, a competition open to the general public, and an image unveiling campaign, in which we invite science centres across the world to apply to receive a huge Hubble image in printed form and organise an event around its release to the public. More information will soon be made available.
At the same time, the year 2015 is the International Year of Light. The International Astronomical Union is coordinating several cornerstone projects under the Cosmic Light umbrella, which you are welcome to join or organise your own events!
With these exciting opportunities in mind, let’s enjoy the last days of 2014 and the holidays that are approaching. We have several outreach gifts for you:
-
The first planetarium mini-show produced in-house at ESO, Journey to the Centre of the Milky Way, free for all planetariums!
-
A wealth of other planetarium resources including our first 8k clips (and possibly the first 8k frames distributed online for free)
- and last but not least Issue 16 of CAPJournal
As always at this time of the year: if you are looking for gifts for your dear ones, we invite you to have a look at the cosmic goodies in our ESOshop — beautiful mounted images, warm apparel, and the brand new ESO calendar. This year Santa arrived in early December with an extraordinary gift to ESO — green light for the construction of the European Extremely Large Telescope, yet another reason to look forward to 2015!
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,
Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
