Dear Fellow Communicators,
For the month of September we would like to draw your attention to a couple of opportunities we have for you:
-
If you are working with secondary school children, we encourage you to let them know about the Second ESO Astronomy Camp — Measuring the Universe. The camp will explore the theme of distances in astronomy through lectures, hands-on activities and night-time observations. Several partners, including ESO, are providing bursaries that will be awarded to the winning applicants. You can read a report of the first camp here.
-
If you are in Munich this October, don’t forget to visit ESO during the ESO Open House Day event, which will take place on the 11th.
For planetarians, visit our recently opened page, dedicated especially to you! Here we have gathered our collection of fulldome shows, stills and clips, as well as 360-degree panoramas, which you are free to use in your own facility. We are preparing all this material in the view of in preparation for the ESO Supernova — Planetarium and Visitor Centre, which will open its doors in 2017.
Also, we’re happy to let you know we are almost ready with a 7-minute, 4k planetarium mini-show that will take your visitors to the centre of our galaxy. Stay tuned, as we will soon make it public.
Last but not least, if you are looking to enrich your science and souvenir shop inside a planetarium, science centre or museum, you might find our updated version of the ESOshop catalogue interesting.
This month, we are accepting new applicants for our network of volunteer translators. If you know anyone who might be interested in contributing translations in exchange for recognition of their work for ESO, please direct them to this form. They can choose to translate from complex products such as books and documentaries to press releases, brochures, ESOcasts or even short social media posts.
Finally, if you are organising an event for the International Year of Light 2015, you can find several resources for Cosmic Light on the IAU pages here.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,
Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
