ESO Outreach Community Newsletter
May 2013

Dear Fellow Communicators,

If you subscribe to our weekly newsletter ESO News, you can now read updates from ESO in your own language. The option is not yet available for the Outreach Community newsletter that you are currently reading.

The new translated newsletters acknowledge that some languages are officially spoken in more than one country. We therefore recommend choosing both your language and your country as the translated newsletters include local announcements that are relevant only for the associated country. To see how ESO News looks for your country, check out the links below. The available country names are given in their native language(s):

Österreich, BelgiëBelgiqueBelgien, Brasil, Česko, Danmark, Suomi, France, Deutschland, Ísland, Italia, Nederland, Norge , Polska, Portugal, Россия, España, Sverige, SchweizSuisseSvizzera, Türkiye, Україна.

To choose a language/country, current subscribers of both newsletters should visit their Subscription Preferences, which can be found both at the top and bottom of the newsletter they already receive via email. New subscribers can choose their favourite language when they sign up.

This month, we welcome a new ESO Photo Ambassador, Stefan Seip — a professional photographer and astrophotographer, living in Stuttgart. Stefan is a biologist and IT specialist by training, but in 2003 he decided to follow his true calling and started to work as a freelance author and photographer. As a Photo Ambassador, Stefan is bringing us a new perspective on our sites through his black and white images. To see his photos and read more, go here.

Our ESO Science Outreach Network has expanded to Romania, represented locally by Valentin Grigore, who now brings you news about ESO in Romanian. Valentin is the founder President of the Romanian Society for Meteors and Astronomy (SARM), the national society of astronomy in Romania. In the last 20 years, Valentin has led hundreds of educational and observational astronomical projects in Romania and abroad.

Finally, we invite experienced astronomy educators and communicators to the ASTRONET workshop to shape Europe’s perspective in these fields. The workshop takes place in Heidelberg, Germany between 17 and 18 June. Applications close on 10 June 2013, but the accommodation deadline will expire soon — 10 May 2013.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
