Dear Fellow Communicators,
We are fast approaching one of the biggest milestones in astronomy this year! On 13 March 2013 the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the largest ground-based astronomical project in the world, will be inaugurated. More than 50 of ALMA’s antennas will be in operation, and all 66 will be fully assembled. The inauguration ceremony will take place at ALMA’s Operations Support Facility (OSF), 34 kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile. We are currently preparing the media event and we invite you to stay close for updates!
The year began with an impressive VIP presence at our sites in Chile. On the occasion of the biggest summit Chile has ever organised, the CELAC-EU summit, ESO was present with an exhibition at the venue where 61 heads of state and of governments from Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union, along with ministers and other officials, were invited. We also welcomed several high-level European delegations to our site in Paranal.
