Dear Fellow Communicators,
The snow is gone and spring is knocking on the door here in Munich!
Applications for the ESO-supported Summer AstroCamp 2019 will open on 1 April 2019. AstroCamp is an academic programme in the field of astronomy and physics, organised by the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto (CAUP), that aims to stimulate curiosity and critical thinking. The camp takes place from 4 to 18 August 2019. The programme is intended for secondary school students from 40 different countries , including all ESO Member States, in one of their final three years of education before university.
We have just published the April–June programme for the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre. Some of the highlights include Softmachine’s film Kaluoka'hina — The Enchanted Reef, which we will show for the Easter and Pentecost school holidays, while our temporary exhibition Lasers, Light, Life will continue to be on display, providing insights into laser technology from its very beginnings to the present day, and highlighting visionary possibilities for its application.
Two rare (for once not sold out) opportunities not to miss:
- On Friday 15 March, from 21:00, musicians Ali and Max, alias tonelabs, return to the ESO Supernova with their performance Fragmented Future , a musical journey that invites you to discover new dimensions.
- On 29 March, from 19:00, you can join a planetarium shows that looks at The Sky Next Month .
We would like to welcome our 30th member of the ESO Photo Ambassadors network, Jordi Busqué . Jordi is a photojournalist, astrophysicist and science communicator from Barcelona who divides his time between photojournalism and science photography. He specialises in stories about vanishing cultures and social changes happening in Latin America, mostly in Bolivia, Peru and Chile.
Finally, from 15 March 2019, we will at ESO have a bigger Department of Communications, which will also include internal communication and communication with our scientific user community. As part of this, we currently have two job openings: Public Information Officer and Web & Advanced Projects Coordinator .
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
