Tijdens een ceremonie in Garching bei München in Duitsland heeft ESO op 25 mei 2016 het contract ondertekend met het ACe Consortium – bestaande uit Astaldi, Cimolai en de geselecteerde onderaannemer EIE Group – voor de bouw van de koepel en telescoopstructuur van de European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Dit is het grootste contract dat ooit door ESO is gegund en tevens het grootste contract in de geschiedenis van de astronomie op vaste grond. Bij deze gelegenheid is tevens het bouwontwerp van de E-ELT onthuld. De bouw van de koepel en de telescoopstructuur gaat nu van start.
