High on the Chajnantor plateau
A stunning view of the Chajnantor plateau in Chile's Atacama desert, which is host to the 66 high-precision antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). This state-of-the-art telescope is designed to study light from some of the coldest, oldest, and most distant objects in the Universe. At an altitude of approximately 5000 metres and in one of the driest places on Earth, ALMA has a marvellously clear view of the sky.
