PLATO Spec, het nieuwe instrument van ESO's observatorium te La Silla is nu klaar voor exoplaneetonderzoek

Twintig jaar na zijn buitengebruikstelling heeft de ESO 1,52-metertelescoop is de La Silla-sterrenwacht in Chili nieuw leven ingeblazen met de installatie van het gloednieuwe PLATO Spec-instrument. Dat is een spectrograaf met hoge resolutie die is ontwikkeld door een consortium onder leiding van de Tsjechische Academie van Wetenschappen. De 50 jaar oude telescoop was in 2022 gerenoveerd. Met het nieuwe instrument is de telescoop klaar om nieuwe baanbrekende astronomische ontdekkingen te doen.
PLATO Spec, dat waarnemingen doet in zichtbaar licht, is ontworpen om sterren te onderzoeken met mogelijke exoplaneten (planeten die rond andere sterren dan de zon draaien). Het instrument zoekt bij de meest veelbelovende sterren naar veranderingen in het licht die ontstaan omdat de ster wiebelt door de zwaartekracht van de planeet. Het instrument is zo nauwkeurig dat het veranderingen in de snelheid van een ster kan detecteren tot slechts 3 meter per seconde (10 kilometer per uur, vergelijkbaar met amateurhardloper).
Het project is ontwikkeld door het PLATO Spec Consortium. Dat consortium bestaat uit het Astronomisch Instituut van de Tsjechische Academie van Wetenschappen (verantwoordelijk voor de modernisering van de telescoop en de front-end), de Duitse Thüringer Staatssterrenwacht Tautenburg (kalibratie-eenheid), de Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (spectrograaf), de Chileense Universidad Adolfo Ibañez (gegevensverwerking en pijplijn) en overige strategische partners. Als onderdeel van dit project is de ESO 1,52-metertelescoop, die sinds 2003 niet meer in gebruik was, nu op bedienbaar.
De spectrograaf zal ruimteobservatoria, zoals de huidige PLATO-missie en de toekomstige ARIEL-missies (beide van ESA), helpen bij hun zoektocht naar exoplaneten. PLATO Spec zal de detecties van exoplaneten ter grootte van Jupiter tot Neptunus kunnen bevestigen en de atmosferen van de exoplaneten bestuderen. Daarnaast helpen de waarnemingen van PLATO Spec om de fysica en beweging van sterren beter te begrijpen. Het gaat dan met name om het meten van de activiteit van een ster in de loop van de tijd.
Het consortium gebruikt 90% van de tijd van de telescoop. De overige 10% van de waarneemtijd wordt toegewezen aan astronomen in Chili. Alle gegevens worden, na een eigendomsperiode, beschikbaar gesteld aan de wetenschappelijke gemeenschap via het wetenschapsarchief van ESO.
