Sunrise at the VLT platform
A view to the northwest at the moment that sunlight reaches the top of Cerro Paranal, home of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The VLT is composed of four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes (UTs), plus four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs). In the picture, from left to right, are: the Control Building, on the west slope of Cerro Paranal and the four UTs (from 1 to 4). In front of the UTs, three ATs are also visible. Located about 120 km south of Antofagasta, in the Atacama Desert of Chile, the VLT is the world's most advanced visible light observatory.
