Road to La Silla
La Silla Observatory is ESO's oldest observatory site in Chile, yet it remains at the forefront of astronomy research. The ESO 3.6-metre telescope, seen at the top of this image, started operations in 1977, and has been constantly upgraded since.
The ESO 3.6-metre telescope now hosts HARPS, the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, which is the most successful finder of low-mass exoplanets to date.
