PLATO Spec, le nouvel instrument de l'Observatoire de La Silla de l'ESO, est maintenant prêt pour la recherche d'exoplanètes

Vingt ans après sa mise hors service, le télescope de 1,52 m de l'ESO, installé à l'Observatoire de La Silla au Chili, a retrouvé une nouvelle vie. Son tout nouvel instrument PLATO Spec, un spectrographe à haute résolution développé par un consortium dirigé par l'Académie tchèque des sciences, vient de voir sa première lumière. Le télescope, vieux de 50 ans, a été rénové en 2022 et, grâce à ce nouvel instrument, il est désormais prêt à faire de nouvelles découvertes astronomiques de pointe.

PLATO Spec, qui effectuera des observations en lumière visible, a été conçu pour détecter les étoiles abritant des exoplanètes potentielles, c'est-à-dire des planètes en orbite autour d'étoiles autres que le Soleil. L'instrument permettra de repérer les étoiles les plus prometteuses abritant des exoplanètes potentielles en détectant les changements dans la lumière de l'étoile hôte, qui oscille sous l'effet de l'attraction gravitationnelle de la planète. L'instrument est si précis qu'il pourra détecter des changements de vitesse de l'étoile jusqu'à 3 m/s, ce qui équivaut à une personne courant à une vitesse modeste.

Le projet a été développé par le consortium PLATO Spec, qui comprend l'Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (responsable de la modernisation du télescope et de la partie frontale), le German Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg (unité d'étalonnage), la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (spectrographe), l'Universidad Adolfo Ibañez de Chile (traitement des données et pipeline), ainsi que d'autres partenaires stratégiques. Dans le cadre de ce projet, le télescope de 1,52 m de l'ESO, qui n'était plus utilisé depuis 2003, a été modernisé avec un instrument de pointe qui peut être utilisé à distance.

Le spectrographe assistera les observatoires spatiaux dans leur recherche d'exoplanètes, notamment, pour l'Agence Spatiale Européenne, la mission actuelle PLATO et la mission à venir ARIEL. PLATO Spec pourra confirmer leurs détections de potentielles exoplanètes de la taille de Jupiter à Neptune et étudier leurs atmosphères. Ses observations permettront également de mieux comprendre la physique et le mouvement des étoiles, notamment de mesurer le niveau d'activité d'une étoile et son évolution dans le temps.

Le consortium sera responsable de 90 % du temps d'utilisation du télescope, 10 % des observations étant confiées à des astronomes basés au Chili. Après une période d'exclusivité, toutes les données seront mises à la disposition de la communauté scientifique par l'intermédiaire des archives scientifiques de l'ESO.
