Tähtitieteilijät ovat ESO:n Very Large Telescope eli VLT-kaukoputken avulla kuvanneet yllättävää Betelgeusen himmenemistä. Betelgeuse on Orionin tähdistössä sijaitseva punainen ylijättiläinen. Tähden pinnasta otetut hämmästyttävät uudet kuvat eivät ainoastaan esitä hiipuvaa punaista ylijättiläistä, vaan myös sen miten sen muoto on muuttumassa.
