VISTA fanger en stor kugle af stjerner

Et nyt billede af Messier 55 fra ESO’s infrarøde kortlægningsteleskop VISTA, viser titusindvis af stjerner klumpet sammen som en sværm af bier. Udover at være pakket sammen på et forholdsvis lille område er disse stjerner også blandt de ældste i universet. Astronomer studerer Messier 55 og andre lignende ældgamle objekter kaldet kuglehobe, for at lære mere om hvordan galakser udvikler sig og hvordan stjerner ældes.

Kuglehobe holdes sammen af tyngdekraften i en tætpakket kugleform. I Messier 55 holder stjernerne sig i hvert fald tæt på hinanden: Omkring hundredetusinde stjerner er pakket sammen i en kugle med en diameter, der svarer til kun omkring 25 gange afstanden mellem Solen og det nærmeste stjernesystem, Alpha Centauri.

Vi kender omkring 160 kuglehobe, der kredser om vores galakse, Mælkevejen, mest omkring dens centrale dele. De to senest opdagede kuglehobe er fundet ved hjælp af VISTA og blev annonceret for nylig (eso1141). De største galakser kan have tusindvis af disse righoldige stjernesamlinger i kredsløb om sig.

Observationer af kuglehobes stjerner afslører, at de er opstået på omkring samme tid – for mere end 10 milliarder år siden – og af den samme sky af gas. Da denne dannelsesperiode kun lå nogle få milliarder år efter big bang, var næsten al den tilgængelige gas den mest simple, letteste og mest almindelige i kosmos: brint sammen med lidt helium og meget små mængder af tungere grundstoffer som ilt og kvælstof.

Fordi de hovedsageligt er dannet af brint, adskiller kuglehobes beboere sig fra stjerner, der er født senere, som vores stjerne, Solen. Den har nemlig fået en indsprøjtning af tungere grundstoffer dannet i tidligere generationer af stjerner. Solen lyste op for omkring 4,6 milliarder år siden, så den er kun omkring halvt så gammel som de ældre stjerner i de fleste kuglehobe. Den kemiske sammensætning af skyen som Solen blev dannet af, afspejles i mængden af grundstoffer, der findes i hele Solsystemet – i asteroider, i planeterne og i vores egne kroppe.

Stjernekiggere kan finde Messier 55 i stjernebilledet Sagittarius (Skytten). Den bemærkelsesværdigt store hob har en bredde svarende til næsten to tredjedele af fuldmånens. Og den kan let ses i en lille kikkert, selvom den ligger godt 17.000 lysår fra Jorden.

Den franske astronom Nicolas Louis de Lacaille beskrev for første gang denne stjernegruppering omkring 1752, og rundt regnet 26 år senere inkluderede en anden fransk astronom, Charles Messier, hoben som det 55. objekt i sit berømte astronomiske katalog. Objektet er også krydslistet som NGC 6809 i New General Catalogue, som er et ofte brugt og mere omfattende astronomisk katalog, der er lavet i slutningen af det nittende århundrede.

Det nye billede er taget i infrarødt lys af 4,1 meter teleskopet Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA, eso0949) på ESO’s Paranal-observatorium i det nordlige Chile.

Foruden stjernerne i Messier 55 viser dette VISTA-billede også mange galakser, der ligger langt fra hoben. En særlig fremtrædende spiralgalakse ses lidt over og til højre for midten af billedet.

VISTA arbejder i infrarødt lys og er verdens største kortlægningsteleskop, mens VLT Survey Telescope (VST) er det største teleskop, der udelukkende er bygget til at kortlægge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er den europæiske partner i et revolutionerede astronomisk teleskop kaldet ALMA, det største igangværende astronomiske projekt. ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 40 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
