Enorme søjler omkring kanten af tågen Sh2-284

Som man kan se rundt i kanten af denne flotte tåge, er der dannet søjler inde i skyen, som peger imod den centrale hob af stjerner. Søjlerne, som er flere lysår i diameter, har vi markeret med punkterede lininer. Disse strukturer dannes, når stjernevindene (vist her som pile) fra den centrale stjernehob møder tættere klumper af stof, som er sværere at nedbryde end omgivelserne. Stoffet omkring skubbes derfor lettere bort af stjernevindene, og disse enorme strukturer efterlades.

As you look around the edges of this spectacular nebula, pillars have formed in the cloud, pointing towards the central cluster of stars. These pillars, which in reality are light-years wide, have been outlined by dotted lines. The structures form when winds (shown here as arrows) from the central star cluster meet denser pockets of material that are harder to erode away than the surrounding regions. Thus, the regions around the pillar are pushed away, while these magnificent structures are temporarily left behind.
