Jak rostou galaxie?
Utváření nejhmotnějších galaxií ve vesmíru

Astronomové zachytili několik hmotných galaxií při procesu jejich slučování v době před 4 miliardami let. Objev významně podporuje všeobecně uznávanou teorii vzniku galaxií. Pořídit snímky se podařilo díky spojení sil těch nejlepších pozemních i orbitálních dalekohledů.
Jak vznikají galaxie? Všeobecně přijímanou odpovědí na tuto základní otázku je model „hierarchického uspořádávání“. Jde o postupný proces, ve kterém se menší galaxie slučují do větších. Utváření galaxií lze připodobnit ke vzniku mohutného toku řeky. Jednotlivé potoky se slévají v říčky, jež se vzápětí spojují do řek. Teoretický model formování galaxií předpokládá, že velké galaxie vznikly postupným sléváním těch menších. Kdy byl však tento růst nejrychlejší? Kdy získaly nejhmotnější galaxie většinu své hmotnosti? Ab y astronomové mohli tyto otázky zodpovědět, studují kupy galaxií. Kupy můžeme chápat jako kosmologický ekvivalent měst, ve kterých galaxie sídlí. „Často se diskutuje, zda-li nejjasnější galaxie v kupách soustavně rostou během posledních miliard let. Naše pozorování ukazují, že v tomto období galaxie přibraly na hmotnosti více jak o 50%,“ říká vedoucí výzkumu Kim-Vy Tran z Curyšské univerzity.
Astronomové k pozorování použili široký soubor dalekohledů a přístrojů, včetně VLT/ESO a Hubbleova vesmírného dalekohledu (HST). Podrobně prostudovali galaxie vzdálené 4 miliardy světelných let, jež se nacházejí v pozoruhodném systému tvořeném čtyřmi skupinami galaxií, které se jednou spojí v kupu. Tým vědců získal snímky přístrojem VIMOS a spektra pomocí zařízení FORS2, oba použité na VLT. Na základě těchto a dalších pozorování mohli astronomové identifikovat celkem 198 galaxií náležících do zmíněných čtyřech skupin.
Nejjasnější galaxie každé skupiny obsahuje okolo sta až tisíce miliard hvězd. Mohou se tak srovnávat s nejhmotnějšími galaxiemi v kupách. „Nejpřekvapivější je skutečnost, že ze čtyř skupin má ve třech případech nejjasnější galaxie také jasného průvodce. Tyto páry utvářejí slučující se systém,“ říká Tran. Seřadíme-li nejjasnější galaxie každé skupiny podle hmotnosti, dostaneme časovou závislost, která ukazuje, jak jasné galaxie postupným slučováním narůstají až do současnosti (tedy za posledních 5 mld let). Ukazuje se, že díky nedávným epizodám tzv. galaktického kanibalismu přibraly největší galaxie na váze nejméně o 50%.
O bjev je jedinečným potvrzením hierarchického formování jak galaxií tak kup galaxií. „Hvězdy v těchto galaxiích jsou již staré a soudíme, že jejich sloučením nová generace hvězd nevznikla,“ zakončuje Tran. „Většina hvězd v těchto galaxiích se zrodila nejméně před 7 miliardami let.“
