¡Construye tu propio E-ELT con piezas de LEGO!

El 19 de junio de 2014 comenzaron las obras de construcción del European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) en el desierto de Atacama en Chile. Estas se iniciaron con la tronadura de la cima del cerro Armazones, lugar donde se llevará a cabo la construcción del telescopio más grande del mundo, para crear una superficie plana para su emplazamiento. Aunque los trabajos ya están en marcha, la primera luz del telescopio (el que tendrá un espejo principal de 39 metros de diámetros) no se registrará antes del año 2024.
Para acelerar el proceso de algún modo, el astrónomo holandés Frans Snik empleó varios meses de su tiempo libre en el diseño de su propio E-ELT. ¡Excepto que este está hecho con bloques de LEGO©! Snik utilizó las herramientas de diseño ldraw y bricksmith para construir un modelo que contara exactamente con 5274 partes adquiridas a través de bricklink. El costo total del modelo, que tiene una escala de 1:150 aproximadamente, es de unos 600 euros.
Mediante el uso de un detallado manual de construcción y una lista de los bloques necesarios, ambos proporcionados por Snik, cualquier persona puede construir su propia versión a pequeña escala del gigantesco telescopio. De esta manera se abre el camino para que cualquier maestro constructor de LEGO pueda recrear el modelo, y lo mejor es que al hacerlo, es posible aprender de qué manera funcionará el novedoso diseño de este increíble instrumento.
Sin embargo, uno debe estar dispuesto a invertir cierto tiempo en la construcción del telescopio de mayor tamaño en el mundo, ya que ensamblar la totalidad del modelo toma algunos días. El producto final gira en ambas direcciones y contiene una increíble cantidad de detalles. Incluye los cinco espejos del telescopio real, los instrumentos, las estrellas guía láser y un camión de LEGO construido a escala en conjunto con el resto del modelo.
El primer modelo de Snik fue donado al Director General de ESO Tim de Zeeuw. Un E-ELT de LEGO también estará en exhibición en el futuro Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre de ESO en la sede de ESO en Garching, Alemania, a partir de 2017.
