De zuidelijke Melkweg boven ALMA

ESOPhoto Ambassador Babak Tafreshi legde dit opmerkelijke beeld van de antennes van de Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA) vast, afgezet tegen de pracht van de Melkweg. De rijkdom van de avondhemel op deze foto getuigt van de onvolprezen astronomische omstandigheden van de 5.000 meter hoge Chajnantor-hoogvlakte in de Chileense regio Atacama.

Deze weergave toont de sterrenbeelden Carina (Kiel) en Vela (Zeilen). De donkere, piekerig stofwolken van de Melkweg stroken van het midden linksboven naar midden rechts onderaan. De heldere oranje ster in de linkerbovenhoek is Suhail in Vela, terwijl we boven in het midden, in Vela, de eveneens oranje ster Avior zien. Van de drie heldere blauwe sterren die een 'L' in de buurt van deze sterren vormen, behoren de linker twee tot Vela en de rechter tot Carina. Precies in het midden van het beeld, onder deze sterren, pronkt de roze gloed van de Carinanevel (eso1208).

ESO, de Europese partner in ALMA, verstrekt 25 van de 66 antennes die de telescoop complementeren. De twee antennes die het dichtst bij de camera staan, waarop de zorgvuldige kijker de markeringen "DA-43" en "DA-41" ziet, zijn voorbeelden van deze Europese antennes. De bouw van de volledige ALMA-opstelling wordt afgerond in 2013, hoewel de telescoop nu al waarnemingen met een deel van de antenneopstelling mogelijk maakt.

Babak Tafreshi is de oprichter van The World At Night, een programma voor het maken en exposeren van een prachtige fotocollectie en time-lapse video’s van `s werelds mooiste en meest historische plaatsen tegen een nachtelijke achtergrond van sterren, planeten en hemelse gebeurtenissen.

ALMA is een internationale astronomische faciliteit. Het is een project van Europa, Noord-Amerika en Oost-Azië, in samenwerking met Chili. De constructie en het gebruik van ALMA worden namens Europa geleid door ESO, namens Noord-Amerika door de National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) en namens Oost-Azië door de National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). De Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) leidt de samenwerking in goede banen en overziet de constructie, de commissioning en het gebruik van ALMA.
