Time-lapse of total solar eclipse from REM

This time-lapse was taken by a team of researchers observing the total solar eclipse visible from ESO’s La Silla Observatory on 2 July 2019. While their scientific observations used the REM telescope, visible in this image, they couldn’t resist capturing the moment as humans saw it as well. It follows the eclipse through totality, then continues to follow the sun as it sets towards the horizon. The bright streaks crossing the sky may look like shooting stars, but they're actually airplanes flying at normal speed — giving a sense of how much time is condensed into this short video.
