Ansicht des Jets von M87 im sichtbaren Licht und Darstellung des Jets und des supermassereichen schwarzen Lochs im polarisierten Licht
Dieses zusammengesetzte Bild zeigt drei Ansichten der zentralen Region der Galaxie Messier 87 (M87) in polarisiertem Licht und eine Ansicht, im sichtbaren Wellenlängenbereich, aufgenommen mit dem Hubble-Weltraumteleskop. Die Galaxie hat ein supermassereiches schwarzes Loch in ihrem Zentrum und ist berühmt für ihre Jets, die weit über die Galaxie hinausreichen. Das Hubble-Bild oben fängt einen Teil des Jets ein, der etwa 6.000 Lichtjahre lang ist.
Eines der Bilder, das mit dem Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile aufgenommen wurde, an dem die ESO beteiligt ist, zeigt einen Teil des Jets im polarisierten Licht. Dieses Bild fängt den Teil des Jets mit einer Länge von 6.000 Lichtjahren ein, der sich näher am Zentrum der Galaxie befindet.
Die anderen Bilder mit polarisiertem Licht zoomen näher an das supermassereiche schwarze Loch heran: Die mittlere Ansicht deckt einen Bereich von etwa einem Lichtjahr Größe ab und wurde mit dem Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) des National Radio Astronomy Observatory in den USA aufgenommen.
Die am stärksten vergrößerte Ansicht wurde durch die Verknüpfung von acht Teleskopen auf der ganzen Welt zu einem virtuellen Teleskop in Erdgröße, dem Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), gewonnen. Dies erlaubt den Astronomen, sehr dicht an das supermassereiche schwarze Loch heranzukommen, in die Region, in der die Jets gestartet werden.
Die Linien markieren die Orientierung der Polarisation, die mit dem Magnetfeld in den abgebildeten Regionen zusammenhängt. Die ALMA-Daten liefern eine Darstellung der Magnetfeldstruktur entlang des Jets. Die kombinierten Daten von EHT und ALMA ermöglichen den Astronomen daher, die Rolle der Magnetfelder von der Umgebung des Ereignishorizonts (wie mit dem EHT auf Distanzen von Lichttagen untersucht) bis weit über die Galaxie M87 hinaus entlang ihrer starken Jets (wie mit ALMA auf Skalen von Tausenden von Lichtjahren untersucht) zu erforschen.
Die Werte in GHz beziehen sich auf die Lichtfrequenzen, bei denen die verschiedenen Beobachtungen gemacht wurden. Die horizontalen Linien zeigen den Maßstab der einzelnen Bilder in Lichtjahren.
