Linda Tacconi zur nächsten Präsidentin des ESO Council gewählt

Linda Tacconi, leitende Astronomin am Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) in Garching, wurde zur nächsten Präsidentin des wichtigsten Führungsgremiums der ESO gewählt, dem ESO Council.
"Ich fühle mich geehrt, zur Präsidentin des ESO-Rates gewählt worden zu sein", sagt Tacconi. "Die kommenden Jahre stellen eine sehr aufregende Zeit für die Organisation dar, da das erste Licht des Extremely Large Telescope der ESO näherrückt und die aktuellen Einrichtungen, wie das Very Large Telescope der ESO, weiterhin an der Spitze der astronomischen Forschung stehen. Die verschiedenen ESO-Observatorien werden synergetisch zusammenarbeiten, um unser Wissen über das Universum zu erweitern und die Position der ESO als weltweit führendes Unternehmen in der bodengebundenen Astronomie zu stärken. Ich freue mich darauf, an dieser Erfahrung teilzuhaben und mit dem Council zusammenzuarbeiten, um die ESO dabei zu unterstützen, diese Führungsrolle zu behalten."
Tacconi schloss 1988 ihre Promotion an der University of Massachusetts in den USA ab und arbeitete später an der Niederländischen Stiftung für Astronomieforschung in Dwingeloo, bevor sie 1991 ihre Karriere am MPE begann. Im Jahr 2012 erhielt sie den Lancelot M. Berkeley New York Community Trust Prize in Anerkennung ihrer Beiträge auf dem Gebiet der Astronomie, insbesondere für ihre Arbeit über kaltes Gas in massereichen sternbildenden Galaxien im jungen Universum.
Tacconi engagiert sich seit vielen Jahren stark für die ESO, unter anderem im Council, wo sie seit 2016 als deutsche wissenschaftliche Delegierte fungiert. Zusätzlich zu ihrer Rolle im Council war sie von 2006 bis 2008 Vorsitzende des Wissenschaftlich-Technischen Komitees der ESO. Sie war auch in mehreren anderen internationalen Gremien tätig, unter anderem als Vorsitzende des Programmkomitees und des wissenschaftlichen Beirats von IRAM, einem internationalen Forschungsinstitut für Millimeterastronomie. Gegenwärtig ist sie Mitglied des ALMA-Boards und Vorsitzende des Senior Committee für das Programm Voyage 2050 der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation ESA, das den Fahrplan der ESA für die Weltraumforschung im Zeitraum 2035-2050 definiert.
Tacconi folgt Willy Benz von der Universität Bern in der Schweiz in der Leitung des ESO Councils nach. Der Generaldirektor der ESO, Xavier Barcons, bedankt sich bei dem ehemaligen Präsidenten: "Ich möchte Willy im Namen aller ESO-Mitarbeiter für seine unermüdliche Arbeit als Ratspräsident danken, insbesondere in diesen beispiellosen Zeiten. Ich freue mich auf die weitere Zusammenarbeit mit Linda in ihrer neuen Rolle als Ratspräsidentin."
