MIDI SD1 and SD2/NGC1068

Abstract

In the standard model for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), the central engine, consists of a hot accretion disk around a massive black hole, and is assumed to be encapsulated by a dusty torus. These tori are held responsible for redistributing the radiation from the hot accretion disk into the mid- and far-infrared and for blocking our direct view into the core of many AGNs. However, with the limited resolution at wavelengths beyond 2.5 microns, none of these putative tori have been seen directly.We propose a high-resolution study at 8 -- 13 microns (N-band) of the nucleus of NGC 1068 one of the brightest nearby AGN, to constrain the size and structure of its nuclear dust emission using MIDI at the VLT Interferometer. This will provide direct observational evidence for the existence of these tori and allow us to distinguish between various proposed models which differ up to a factor of 20 in the size of the predicted tori.
